Silver Creek Gorge Estate is a unique fusion of lifestyle, farming, game, and aviation living, nestled in the heart of the Buffelspoort Valley. Set against the dramatic northern slopes of the Magaliesberg, the estate offers a breathtaking backdrop that complements its tranquil charm.
Home to a variety of free-roaming wildlife-including Wildebeest, Zebra, Kudu, and Nyala-it's a sanctuary where nature and aviation enthusiasts alike can thrive.
Whether you're drawn by the call of the bushveld or the hum of propellers overhead, Silver Creek Gorge provides a peaceful escape from the bustle of urban life, inviting visitors and residents to slow down and reconnect with the sky or the bush.
The annual Pancake Fly-In took place this past weekend, and I was there to soak up some much-needed aviation action. Arriving at the airfield just after 08:30, I was greeted by the unmistakable hum of activity and the sight of a bustling flight line. To the southern side of the runway, a demarcated area had already filled with aircraft-more than 30 by my initial count. It was an impressive sight: a diverse gathering of wings and rotors.
A constant stream of arrivals and departures animated this picturesque runway, perched elegantly on a rise in the terrain. Silver Creek's runway, oriented 08/26, stretches 1,200 metres in length and 10 metres in width-ample space for a wide variety of aircraft. It was no surprise to see everything from the compact RX-550 Beaver to the continent-crushing King Air 90 operating on the day.
Nothing was left to chance by the organizers of the day, with aircraft marshals being posted along the parking area in order to assist with positioning the arriving aircraft.
Another highlight of the day-certainly not left to chance-was the eagerly anticipated rugby test between the Springboks and the All Blacks in Wellington. One of the prime viewing spots was under the expansive new roof and stretch tent at The Runway, the Estate's flying clubhouse. As the match unfolded, cheers of elation echoed through the bushveld air, with the crowd erupting in celebration as the Boks triumphed in
spectacular fashion-43 points to 10 over their fierce rivals.
The hallmark of this Fly-In event is undoubtedly the pancakes. A delightful array of savoury and sweet fillings is on offer, catering to every palate-from hearty vegetarian options to the irresistible Tikka Chicken, which I happily chose. Honestly, had there been no onlookers, I might have abandoned all decorum and licked my plate clean. It was that delicious!
Just a short stroll from the clubhouse led to the serene camping area, where several pilots had opted to overnight from Friday. The site boasted sparkling clean ablutions and shaded stands nestled beneath classic bushveld trees, all set on lush, inviting grass. As I wandered through, I spotted EAA322 Camping Guru, Niel Bowden, and his family packing up their setup in preparation for departure. It was a brief but heartwarming catch-up, especially after their latest Oshkosh adventure.
One of the standout features of this countryside Fly-In is the array of exhibitors, a clear testament to the event's growing significance on the aviation calendar. The lovely ladies at Anna's Pantry shared that their artisanal bakes had nearly sold out-no surprise given the tempting aromas and homemade charm. Over at Acorn and Anvil, the kind gentlemen proudly displayed their exquisite leather goods, each piece a work of craftsmanship. Aviation Direct made an appearance too, showcasing their trusted products widely used by South African pilots. And for those seeking expert guidance, Commet Aviation was on hand, offering valuable advice and services to the aviation community.
With my pancake tanks topped up and my rugby spirits soaring, I made my way back to the runway-camera in hand-to catch the departing aircraft and a few cheerful faces along the way.
What a wonderful day out in the bushveld! Huge thanks to Silver Creek Gorge for hosting yet another unforgettable event. From the vibrant atmosphere to the incredible hospitality, it was a celebration of aviation, community, and the beauty of the South African outdoors.
