Vans RV Day, Kitty Hawk 2025-09-13

by Russell Dixon-Paver

There were very comfortable weather conditions on the day, with winter jumping straight into early summer. There was some cloud around and winds were light variable.

Some 28 aircraft were registered for the day, with a good crowd of visitors and locals enjoying the superb buffet breakfast. Turnout was less than expected due to many other events and activities at this time of year. The rugby was on, so some folks were watching inside, where some tables had been thoughtfully set up for those who also need their “rugby fix”. The garden and lawn outside the clubhouse was looking magnificent - just the spot for a family outing, children's play area, a great meal and some aviation action.

Kitty Hawk and RV's.

Locally hangered aircraft got in some early flights before the visitors started arriving.

Local RV drivers, Daan Conradie and Martin Louw got in an early flight before parking their machines in front of the clubhouse.

Local, non-RV residents going about their normal activities. There was one formation flypast!

Some of the arrivals and locals having gone to “stretch their wings”. Dawie and Chris did a superb job of coordinating arrivals and aircraft parking.

After the rugby was over and people were more attentive, Dawie welcomed everyone formally.

The RV salute!

More arrivals.

Visiting Navion - what it takes to “blow your hair back” and a runway inspection on departure.

The Micro Car Club of South Africa had an exhibition of some of their beautifully restored cars. Including Kübelwagen, BMW Isetta 300, two Gogomobile Limosin T250, Fiat 500 Cabrio, Messerschmitt “bubble car”.

For the land-based petrol-heads.

A local RV took a short flight around the patch.

When your RV is parked on a slight downhill facing a wall, you need a friend as “reverse assistance” when you need to go…

Mitch Wright did some aerobatic practice in the box on departure.

Some of the departures.

Yak 52 aerobatic practice in the box. The sound of that big radial stirs the soul!

Two stalwarts at most fly-ins - Carl Jensen and Hilton Wolff depart for their respective home airfields.

The Kitty Hawk RV Day was clearly enjoyed by those attended. Mark your calendars, as the next Kitty Hawk RV Day is planned for 2026-09-12. Hopefully there will be some co-ordination next year so events do not fall on the same day.

A special thank-you to Dawie, Chris and Lynette and their teams who did all the legwork behind the scenes to make for and enjoyable day of “committing aviation”, RV-style.
